This from a BBC news science report:
'Scientists in India and Pakistan say higher temperatures were just one factor behind the recent heatwaves and other causes have yet to be established.'

I hope that wasn't a privately educated journalist.

Sloppy English. By saying "heatwaves" he may have meant to refer to the effects of the heatwaves

I now see that if you stress the word 'one' it makes more sense. Sort of.
It could be particulates in the air from burning the money they're handed.
Some of those nuclear weapons facilities and space programme sites can get cold of a night.

As I understand it a heatwave means higher temperatures, so it isn't a factor, it's what is trying to be explained.
