I have had one of these sitting about and have never used it - how do I get it to work and listen in - basic terms please....I'm not hugely technical!

You can get loads of frequencies to listen to at http://www.radiowaves.fsnet.co.uk/links.html as well. Choose Frequency Lists from the menu on the left.
