How To Drive For Test
Hi,
i am trying to teach a youngster how to drive. she is reasonable, but after talking to a recently passed friend, it seems i am not doing this right. question is: If you are in top gear, and approaching a junction where you have to stop, do you change down? if so, to what gear at what speed? do you continue in high gear and let the car slow using the brake, then dip the clutch at the last minute? I.m afrais that i have been driving so long that i just put the car into neutral and let it roll to a stop, no wear on the clutch and silent. i am only teaching her to get used to a car, then she will have proper instruction.
thanks,
Annie.

Well don't use the gears to slow down. That is what brakes are for.The low gears (1st and 2nd) can be engaged as an engine braking system if you are going down a long steep incline. If you continue to use the brakes under those conditions you get overheating and brake fade. Clutches are more expensive than brake pads/shoes to replace. Another thing you learn in Roadcraft "Car Sympathy" :-)
db :-)
The North Peculiar(A406) was a worse nightmare before the M25 circumnavigated London. Ealing Common ,Gunnersbury. My driving patch was the West End and West/South West London.
I always told my family/friends that when you negotiate/enter Marble Arch or Hyde Park Corner just barge in like a black cab driver does.
Bit unfair advice from me really as I had a white car with jam sandwich stripes and blue lights on the roof when I negotiated these nightmares. The Hanger Lane Gyratory is a barrel of laughs also :-)
