I have an old fridge freezer, bit tatty but in full working order. I advertised it on Gumtree for free if someone wants to collect. Done that many times and mostly someone local comes round and takes it away. Anyway I get this text from someone who's 100+ miles away asking if it's still available. It seems odd to me that someone would do a 200+ mile round trip for something that is basically worthless. So my in built scam detector was activated but I cannot figure out what the scam is, anyone any idea?

They might be after the Jaaaag :-)

Possibly something similar to what I encountered last year:

I'm amazed anyone would agee to pay anything at any point when offering an item for free. Or even if not free for that matter. Surely that'd fail every time, unless some poor soul with dementia got caught.

Have you asked him if he knows how far away you are?

Question Author

yes barry first thing I did.

I have used 'Freegle' for several years with no problems whatever. I have given away over 75 items, some very heavy . On Freegle the person's profile can be checked, where they live and how many items they have offered or collected and whether they have good or bad points. Their admin is reliable. I only post offers in two local areas.

It'll probably involve a variation on you having to pay the driver £20 collection fee and the scammer will transfer you the money first but accidentally transfer you £200 and ask you to send £180 back; then his payment to you will be reversed

They might be visiting and need it for a relative who lives near you. Young person at uni for example...

Proceed with caution and at any sniff of a fee, duck out.

Yeah. Now they know your address and that you have "stuff". They now contact other member of the "community" to call round and check you out. Keep an eye out for tarmac wagons.

They might be after the Jaaaag :-)

16:19, good point and who could blame them, a fine example of one of the last proper jaaags!

Any more thoughts on the Bentley Conti?

I'm leaving it for now. The one I was interested in was being sold by an idiot who did npt communicate with me. Thus he was hiding something. I'm still sort of interested but waiting for the right car.

What was that TTT an XK120?   Now were talking.

There should be plenty coming up in the next few months.

yes retro, that was actually the fastest car in the world at some point in the 50s. Mine is an X350 so it's basically a ford Jag but when I say the last proper jaaag I mean it looks like a jag. Compare that with the X351 which is a stunning car in every way except the most important one, It don't look like a jaaag.
