router shut out problem

I wanted to update my router settings but when I type the address in my browser a box comes up asking for my username and password to access the page, I put in my routers password but have never given it a username is there a way round this please

Mark you were right but for both pieces. I typed admin in username and p/w boxes and got through many thanks
