Well that's been a pleasant surprise, another nice warm sunny day today in Leicestershire, we thought that the nice days had gone after the freezing temps we had yesterday. But No, we have been gardening all day in short sleeve T shirts and even had lunch outside ........... wonderful! Not looking forward to the coming week though, says it could even SNOW! and Easter looks really dismal ..........but we are grateful to have enjoyed our brief spell of Summer this week and really pitied those of you at work! :)

Has anyone had a better deal than this?

Seemed a nice day in other places too I understand, that was a bonus as it was the weekend. We were out in the garden all day desperate to fill our garden waste bin for the final time - next week our rotten council is charging £32 yearly for a different bin collection, otherwise we will have to take it all to the tip. Everyone in our town is complaining but I think its happening everywhere in the country gradually - we all thought this was covered in the council tax? We are buying a compost bin so it will just be large branches and weeds we will have to take to the tip. :(

lovely here too Ann, but much cooler, and tonight is really chilly!.......heating is on again!..........not a bad week forecast for us here in South Wales, but a lot cooler than last week!...........

Why are you being charged £32...a different bin collection?

We have a weekly green large bin collection for garden and food waste.

Think we are due for some rain this week, its simply ages since we had any in Leics and our area (covered by Severn Trent) is almost at a hose pipe ban - we've escaped this weeks ban, but they are monitoring the situation - I do hope we don't have a ban as I love my garden with lots of flowers and it takes some watering with a can!.

we don't get a collection for garden waste ever!........we have to take ours to the tip ourselves, despite paying council tax!........

It's been absolutely gorgeous here in Bristol. We must make the most of every day like this just in case we don't get any more. I think rain is forecast for Wednesday, but maybe it will only be showers, or maybe even, they might be wrong, it has been known.

Chi-Chi we used to have a weekly collection in square boxes of paper (green box) and glass and plastic (grey box) and a fortnightly wheelie bin collection - brown for garden rubbish, black for everything else. This worked perfectly and our recycling rates soared, but now they want to charge to collect the garden waste. Councils all over the country are jumping on the bandwagon and copying this idea. Many people do not have room for a third wheelie bin for garden waste as they are doing away with the boxes and making us put glass, paper and plastic all thrown in together in the brown wheelie bin. How can this be better, when they have to pay someone to now separate it all out, we used to do it for them! Bonkers idea! Hardly any families in our street are taking them up on their "exciting" new initiative (as it says in their gumf that came thro the door!) their brilliant idea of charging us extra £32 year is going down like a lead balloon!

Our council have always charged for a garden waste bin, so we compost ours and shred the woody bits into the compost. The rest goes to the tip.

Could you talk to the neighbours and pay for one bin between you perhaps? £16 a year each doesn't seem so bad. None of our neighbours have them here but I did think I'd share with them if they did.

Maid up - we have talked about sharing a bin but I usually fill one in a fortnight! Also as we have an elderly touring caravan parked on our drive, its impossible to get the wheelie bins past that so we have to leave them on the drive near to the path. It would be too much of a temptation for unscrupulous people to come and use our bin in the dead of night as they are so easily accessible!
