How is it that some have already changed their names in the past, I was under the impression that one couldn't?

I believe you could, if Ed agreed it.
They haven't, as far as I know. What people mean is that have had more than one identity and sometimes stopped using the initial one
Where people adopted a new name I don't think it brought all posts under teh new name
I've tried to log in with new name, couldn't
As the proposed changes under the amnesty hasn't been processed yet I think AOG is saying people have made changes previously (eg where fgt said she used to be redhelen).
Firstly, thanks for doing this on a new thread! Saves me editing the other one!

"How is it that some have already changed their names in the past, I was under the impression that one couldn't?"

Usually people who come to me privately (via email) and have personal/privacy reasons for a name change have a fairly good chance of me changing it for them.

We'll announce when the changes will be made in the other thread. They will be made all at once, not "as they come".
Privacy reasons usually go along the lines of:

"I used my real name, my post code and my pin code as my username, doh!"

Thanks AB Editor, but what about in redhelens case, why was she able to change hers?

Also isn't it against Site Rules to have more than one username?
I doubt that the ED will discuss other people's personal and private reasons with us AOG, and quite right too.
i only want to know do we do this ourselves, or will it be Ed decision once he knows which ones we want, as i haven't a clue how to change it to the one i presented on the relevant thread
Ed's team will do it.
Hi AOG- perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned FGT's case - I only did so because she had mentioned herself on an earlier thread about how and why she created a new name and I wanted to give an example of where it had happened. Where it has been allowed I'm not aware that the history was also moved across.
"Thanks AB Editor, but what about in redhelens case, why was she able to change hers?"

She asked me to remove her account for reasons I agreed with so she could come back anonymously. She didn't change her name, she quitted one account and started another. Since then she's decided to "announce" it to everyone that she's redehelen.

While we don't usually talk about individual users this is well (self-)publicised so I see no reason not to use it as an example.

"Also isn't it against Site Rules to have more than one username?"

Yes. It was a negotiated "clean slate" as it were with a new account. It was an exceptional circumstance and not something we'll be repeating very soon, often, or at all if we can help it!

Em10 - we'll do it our end once we've tallied the changes. We'll put together a little email for everyone involved.

all the best.

Well that's strange because a recent regular user had a flounce and deactivated their account only to come back the next day with a username showing they had been active since 2006 -how does that work??

I'm not infallible? :)

It's only a problem really if someone is being a pain/breaking Site Rules, we're unlikely to notice otherwise. And in equal measure, they're likely to be doing no harm.
