Why do we have them? I never look at them. Maybe it would be best just to lump them all into the main category . . .

very few are worth keeping

most people just post on the main header anyway

its not like they help people to search for answers - because who searches by looking at threads? surely people search in the search box

and its not like people go to say motoring and think i want to look at questions only about cars so i am only looking in cars, and not look in 'other vehicles' because they own a car.

just mean more boxes to click on

I think the sub categories should stay permanently open, rather than clicking on Topics to 'reveal' them.

you'd have to turn your screen on its side to read them all, SlackAlice. I imagine the shorter list is just for legibility purposes.

I wonder if anyone does the sudoku or tetris.

Perhaps we just need to update the sub categories, to create awareness of them, with a few new ones, eg ...

Sport
> Netball
> Lacrosse

I agree- now that the very heavily used (at weekends) Q&P section has been split into Crosswords and Q&P I see no need for any of the other subsections to exist, although perhaps Religion & Spirituality should be promoted to become a topic of its own.

And Geneology should perhaps have its own section too.

And maybe it's time to put Crosswords in the right place alphabetically on the list of topics

The whole subject of Topics needs to be examined. Perhaps having lots of Sub Categories has something to do with additional spaces for advertising and making targeting of adverts easier.

there are some that are useful -
such as under soc and people - for instance, religion and hobbies are two very different subjects under a very wide reaching header and are not related at all, so its good to separate them, but in q&p or motoring, the subjects are all more or less the same thing and are under a very specific header and not worth separating

It's mainly a historical quirk - we added topics as they were requested by users, and some have now fallen out of fashion.

I would be tempted to create bigger headings and group them together under those - in a newspaper style
