We've just suspended 13 members who decided to post nonsense in a thread in Law.

I'm making this post as it will hopefully cut down on the number of indignant emails we get... It's a bit of a special case as it's a large number of members and many of them are long serving and much liked members.

I shouldn't have to say this - but there's only one place for nonsense, and that's Chatterbank.

In Law heads roll when you muck about.

But you know that already...

Here is the thread:

http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Law/Question1307583.html

My comment is at the end here, where I closed the question:

http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Law/Question1307583-31.html

Users were suspended for passing judgement, spamming nonsense, being rude, counting the number of answers in hope of getting to whateverhundred, posting irrelevant answers, encouraging irrelevant answers, and generally taking the piss.

Some of these users also gave good answers and then went of the rails. It makes it a little sadder than restraint couldn't have been shown on their part.

I know it's easy to get swept up in a bit of playground bullying.

But they weren't in a playground.

I know sometimes those asking questions can be frustrating, but the lack of empathy and compassion was stunning. If you don't like something, please just avoid posting on it... I have no idea why this isn't obvious.

Apologies to the rest of you - you're probably as bored of this kind of behaviour as I am, and would prefer to not read any more about it.

All the best,

Ab Editor.

PS. I don't care if it's "unfair" in any way. Thanks.

It’s not very often that I stick my head above the parapet but on this occasion I must do so. Firstly, I accept I did post some fairly intemperate replies to the OP on the estoppel thread – for that I apologise. Yes I was losing my rag and yes I probably shouldn’t have done so. Secondly, when posters go to the Law section I am generally appalled with what they...

Spot on Jno....it was a bit like being a parent....trying to explain to a stubborn child....again and again until you have to let rip.
I don't Gness. People are warned and warned to keep that stuff to CB.
''adding to the sum of human knowledge''

And with that in mind:

estoppel:
ORIGIN mid 16th century: from Old French estouppail.

Ooh la la.
If your blood pressure is shooting up, time to step away from the thread, im sure everything will be rosy again in a week when the suspendee's return from the naughty step
well, you just have to take deep breaths and be on your way with a smile on your lips and a song in your heart. Sticking around stubborn children is not compulsory.
Would that we were all so controlled and perfect, MJ....but alas some of us reach a limit.
I'm neither controlled or perfect Gness, but I stayed out of that thread because it was a subject I knew nothing about.
''with a smile on your lips and a song in your heart''

We don't live in a Disney movie ;-p
I do. Tron, I think. But I digress.
I never knew what Estoppel meant, till I read the thread!
"ignorance of the law is no excuse, Mamyalynne"

It is my excuse, although you don't need to be a lawyer to comment it helps if you have some experience of the topic in point, I didn't - hence had no concrete advice to offer. If everyone else did then I apologise, I am unable to read that many pages.
I have been meaning to ask a question on this site about people who ask just one question which is about something obscure or strange. If an 'odd' question comes up on Latest Posts I always look to see the history of the person asking the question, and nine times out of ten they are one-offs.
I don't really understand about Trolls (?) and have wondered whether these are in that category?
Perhaps I am just too cynical?

Helly, most people find their way here via google.
just my little joke, Mamyalynne, it's what the police say when you tell them you didn't know something was illegal. Sadly, ignorance of the law doesn't stop some people posting their opinions in threads on criminal law in particular; but this thread actually looks as if it was quite helpful... for a while.
Everyone has a 'first' question....it is easy sometimes to assume the nature of the poster, but not always wise to do so.
Just looked at the reasons above for suspensions and at those who have been suspended.

Far too inconsistent to be fair, Ed.
Jno, I understand, sorry if I sounded over serious. :-)
I'll second gness here - it could have been nipped in the bud before positions became entrenched - bit like the Liberals scandal with their Chairman in fact - early pruning and it doesn't inflate out of proportion.
It is quite a list isn't it.
