Ipad Queerie

When I scroll down the page from top to bottom with my finger my keyboard comes up and I see loads of e mails from weeks back in fact I saw a few from nov when I first had I pad . I click the keyboard off and I can then scroll through them all but I cant find any way to delete them. When I get e mails I delete the majority and always clear the trash ect. every day. So it is not because I am not clearing them so why are they still there. Any suggestions most welcome but not too technical. Thanks
