Pc Problem

My Sony Vaio laptop I bought new a couple of years ago has developed a problem:
Upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 a couple of weeks ago all went well until I got a message that said something like "MS recommends you do not use MS Edge as Mc Afee may not be able to protect your computer" I clicked on OK.
Since then the Vaio has become useless. If I click on the email icon in the task bar the big envelope appears on screen for about 1/10th second so i can't get emails. If I click on Firefox or IE the rotating loading icon appears for a fraction of a second but I get no browsers. I can't get McAfee to do a scan either for the same reason.
I've tried making a restore CD disc set but after 20min of it copying files have received the message "unable to complete due to faulty media"
Any ideas for a fix would be very welcome
Thank you

There are some troubleshooting / reapir options to try, including reverting to your previous windows version, which is the option that I personally would do initially, where I would then uninstall McAfee before attempting to perform another Win 10 installation.
If you can start to the Win 10 logon screen, in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen you will see a 'wheel/power-off' type icon which if you click it will display 3 options, one which is 'Restart'.
If you hold down the keyboard 'Shift' key and click 'restart', then keep holding down the pressed 'shift' key, Windows will reboot into a 'Choose Option' screen. One of those options displayed is 'Troubleshoot'.
Click 'Troubleshoot' and you can then try either 'System Restore' option to revert back to a previous Windows 10 restore point, or the other to try is attempt 'Start-Up' repair.
A third option is to select 'Reset this PC' from the 'Troubleshoot' Screen. With that option it should give you the opportunity to return to your previous Windows Version, as long as it is not 30 days passed since you upgraded to Win 10.
Hope that helps.

Use this to check that Sony offers support for the upgrade for your particular model before you do anything

So, if you power-on the computer does it startup and eventually present you with the initial Win 10 'Splash Screen' showing the Time and Date and if you then mouse-click on that screen does it then show the logon password screen?
If it does, try the instructions in my previous post to attempt access to troubleshooting / repair options menu i.e. mouse-click the 'circle/wheel' icon bottom right-hand corner of screen. Then hold down the shift key, and keep it pressed throughout, then mouse-click the option 'Restart' and still keep the shift key pressed whilst the system restarts.

Hello pinky and thanks
When I power on the PC it defaults to my desktop.
However I've just found that if I do Crt alt del and choose "switch users" I'm taken a sign in screen (note no splash) After I enter my pin I'm taken back to desktop where again nothing works.
I can't get to Windows 10 when I click on the Windows icon at bottom left of screen. There's a "search the web and Windows" slot next to the Windows icon but whatever I type into that brings no response.

From what you describe it sounds as if some of your system files have got corrupt somewhere along the way or maybe a system update that has gone wrong.
A few things to try, first lets see if you can access the Windows 10 'Settings menu. What do you get if you hold down the 'Windows' icon key on your keyboard and press the 'I' key? It should bring up the 'Settings' menu. Does that work?
