My friend has asked me how to be able to access the site, I cannot remember how i first became a member

And top left (in red) they'll have the option to "sign up"

Warn your friend to expect to be given the third on joining!!!!

Tell your friend to sign-up to AB and then, if you tell us his/her username, I feel sure there will be a good welcome to the person concerned. Also mention the fact that we all might appear to be lunatics who are, in reality, lovely folk who, by and large, are most helpful and friendly.

I doubt if there is a better Q & A site.
