spyware!!!

anyone that can help me thanks in advance..i am with aol and i use their spyware for free and mcafee for the fire wall and virus scan...well mr m is a pain and he has crashed my pc 2 times ..as he keeps going in music sites or downloading ...well he has done it again i have a malaware that keeps hi jacking my pc..and causing me connection problems..is it worth me buying something like the norton internet security?? i will have to reboot my pc from scratch again tommorow..as i cant get rid of his latest malaware it keeps coming back...grrrrrr..so i will end up green in here yet again ..as i have forgot my password ..its a nightmare as i have lost things through this happening all the time .

i think he is just going in music sites line win mx ..and last time he downloaded a radio station from abroad...i can get adaware and spybot free with aol i did download the spybot before..and when we had problems aol said sometimes they disable the fire wall..its all a bit technical for me..my daughter has the norton internet software and has never had a problem..mr m reckons he didnt download anything this time he was just looking....and i cant find anything he has downloaded so i have to believe him..oh well thanks for your help..

Is your virus scanner up to date? I assume it updates itself automatically but it's worth checking manually then doing a full scan.

Some of the modern malware is very devious and technically very clever if it wasn't such a menace and invasion of privacy. But nearly all of it can be got rid of without reformatting. It might be worth going straight for the big guns. Download and run Stinger from HERE. This will get most of them. Download the standalone version of CWShredder from HERE. It is also worth getting the Microsoft Anti-Spyware program from HERE. All of the above software is free.

There is more stuff, but the site it lives on appears to be down at the moment. Check www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/ every now and then 'cos it has some great stuff on it. In particular, Hijack This will examine your computer and produce a log file which you can then post on a web forum where a tech-head will look over it and guide you step by step through removing the bad stuff.
