i am getting seriously p****d off with win media player 10, i was running version 6 and could play downloaded movie clips no probs, with 10 i get "you need a license" or "you need a security update"
now i tried to watch a streamed vid and i get more s***" "proxy server "- or whatever jibberish
i updated to view clips that wouldnt play on 6 and they worked on 10 - but now i get these probs
divx and realplayer also p*** me off because they try to update every millisecond

I've got Realplayer on my PC solely because I listen to a lot of internet radio and many stations use the 'Real' format for their streamed content. I've also got DivX but I can't quite rember why!
If, however, you're looking for a decent (free) media player which handles just about every format you can throw at it (except 'Real', due to licensing issues), doesn't keep trying to update every other day and is really user-friendly, then it's got to be VLC:
