27a Character from 25 perhaps a long way from base (3) P?I (the answer to 25 is ODYSSEY). Can't make up my mind whether it's PSI or PHI.

Phi (Gr. letter, ref 25d) - pH scale from 0 (acid) > 14 (base), so 'pH1' is a long way from base
Phi - Lie-In King parsed it very well a while ago. PH refers to the measuring scale for acids.
Phi

Greek character and ph 1 (a long way from base /alkaline)

Thanks people. I know it's been a while since I retired but this is terminology which I used regularly then. Haven't had much need to refer to it recently though.
