It was closed down before I could respond. Ok It's the odd swear I use that is the bone of contention. I get that, I will no longer try and bypass the swear filter. Though I do think that the odd minor swear word does garnish writing that is meant too emulate the peaks and trough's of speech rather than an essay.

I'm shocked that anyone would have the Gaul to add an Asterix!

nobs: "on a thread where you are claiming it's perfectly acceptable to post incomprehensible twaddle, you moan about someone posting incomprehensible twaddle ..... " - come one mine and PP's are not comparable, yeah I use the odd abbreviation and a bit of rhyming slang, even some Butchers back slang but it's easily worked out unless you are always "concerned of Tunbridge Wells" and just hit the angry button without thinking. Alan Turing couldn't figure out what PP is on about!

margie: "Oh come now bednobs, pp takes it to a whole different level! " - indeed!
^^^ he’s right, I don’t have a clue what PP talks about
// He'd be incomprehensible to Bletchley park yet he gets away with murder.//

sorry to interfere in this thread on a point of er "order"

you ( er one) cant be incomprehensible AND get away wiv murder because - - they wouldnt know it was murder
yeah?
one ( icomprehensible) or the other ( gets away wiv murder)
but cannot be both at the same time .....

sozza - I know this point is beyond some of you
// Alan Turing couldn't figure out what PP is on about!//

foo ! yes he would because he would READ it first
Question Author
dunno what he said, as soon as I see PP, I skip it.
thing is, there no difference between "unintelligible" and "even more unintelligible" they are both unintelligible
Same here TTT.
I haven’t read anything posted by PP for years - I can’t be arsed to decipher them.
Never say never.

//I disagree.

I manage to write long and often on this site, and to my knowledge, I never use a swear word as part of my posts.

The notion that an unpleasant word 'garnishes' a post is, in my view, a lazy excuse for poor writing, and it's unnecessary. //

I disagree.
I recall you at least once using a variation of an expletive. I won't bother digging it out. I wouldn't want to be accused of trawling your past disclosures. :-)
Swearing is great for emphasis; my father used to say to me it shows a limited vocabulary, and I couldn’t disagree more.

Who hasn’t struck their thumb with a hammer and let out a loud F word?

I rarely use the worst word - I save that for those who really deserve it...like the idiots at the weekend’s protest.
Came in at the tail-end of this thread and have realised the swearing was about the written word, so yes, fair enough, but mild profanity shouldn’t (bloody etc...) offend anybody.

I challenge the Editor’s assertion that this is a family site, as that suggests children use it, and they most certainly do not (possibly the exception being TheDevil).
Deskdiary - // I challenge the Editor’s assertion that this is a family site, as that suggests children use it, and they most certainly do not .. //

If The Ed says they do, then I imagine she knows somewhat more about who uses the site that she edits, rather than you, who simply posts on it.

Wouldn't you say?
I would agree that virtually all members are of adult age but that does not mean that children never access this site to view questions and answers.

Perhaps if the language were toned down, younger folk would join in greater numbers.
Do you honestly believe children use this site?
TLC
Perleeeeez. A noble sentiment but the kids around here would make a navvy blush with their language and that's in a creche.

My Grandchildren have often asked what I'm looking at if I laugh, say at a funny animal video or the like.

I'll let them sit and watch it but then make sure they don't click anywhere else on the site despite them now being old enough to watch and read the News.

They could of course simply go home and register as members themselves, I don't think any have done so.
Given the required information required to enrol into AB I can't see how anyone could know the age of its members. Not all people in this world are paragons of virtue and tell the truth. Some of the genders given are deliberately misleading.
There is no age stipulation on joining is there?

My Daughters are both members and have been for years but they rarely post.
its possible to view without joining as well.
