It might be like Wikipedia, who ask for donations when their funds are running low.
I have donated a small sum to Wikipedia given the use/value I get from the site.

Maybe if the reason for the donation was explained, some might give – besides the moderators (who are probably giving their time for free), there are other costs in running such a site as this.
