No heating today as I forgot to order oil.  This is the second consecutive time I've done this.  What can I do to prevent this happening again?

Can the company you order from send an email reminder?  Or, if you have a smartphone you can set an alarm or calendar reminder.

We had a system whereby the level in the tank was visible in the house, cant remember how it worked but contact your supplier maybe they have a system

Oil tank contents gauges help you to see and monitor the oil level in your tank. At Fuel Tank Shop, we offer a range of affordable and accurate contents gauges including smart Wi-Fi tank level monitoring systems, visual oil tank gauges, clock type oil tank gauges and electronic oil tank monitors.

Although we stock a wide range of oil tank gauges, they all do essentially the same thing – they provide a reading on the contents remaining in your oil tank. Our range of oil tank gauges are easy to install as replacement models or for installing as part of a new tank installation.

Other remote content gauges use a transmitter to relay tank oil to a receiver in the home or office so that you can monitor oil levels remotely. In fact, our smart Wi-Fi enabled tank level monitor from Kingspan's SENSiT enables you to monitor your oil levels from your phone, through a smartphone app. It can tell you if your tank is running low, alert you to sudden drops, predict when you will run out of fuel and tell you how much oil you are consuming — all at your fingertips! Link it to Amazon's Alexa and ask “Alexa, how much oil do I have in my tank?”. For more from the Kingspan Watchman range, please click here.

We also supply oil tank gauges that don’t need any power to function. These are simple, low-cost gauges that come in different sizes to suit

Just get it topped up regularly. Oil suppliers will do that, keep you on a rota

I pay a direct debit each month and then they order for me when my tank gets to 30%

Write a reminder in your diary.

I'll ask the oil company if they do the regular

top-up.  That would save me having to remember.

Most oil companies will let you do a DD and auto top up

Write on your calendar (in capital letters) when you think your oim may get low.  At that date, check it.  Also write a couple of weeks later to check the tank.  Works for us.

I get one or two deliveries a year - the oil company do it without asking.

On this subject, if I may sandy. Are there dfferent grades of heating oil?  My boiler is smelling as it's never done before - the flue has been cleaned & the boiler has been serviced.

Any thoughts please ?
