discrimination over your school

Most of us have no choice about the school to which we are sent.

So shouldn't it be unlawful to discriminate against someone on that basis alone?

Gordon The Moron pinned his election hopes on ...

"Don't vote for David Cameron, because he went to Eton."

Well, he couldn't have said ...

Don't vote for Candidate X because he's black.

or

Don't vote for candidate Y because she's a lesbian.

or

Don't vote for Candidate Z because he's a Jew.

So why is it acceptable to pick another aspect of someone's persona, over which that person had no control, and ask that they be discriminated against purely on that basis ?

If Gordon Brown's principle's are upheld, and people are allowed to use a person's school as a basis for discrimination, there is nothing to stop job advertisements saying ...

"No Applicants From Comprehensive Schools Please!

Thankfully, Gordon has been sent back to the wilds of Scotland. But do we need legistation to prevent that kind of nastiness in the future ?

JJ...LOL....You do have this thing about private education ....don't you?
Did you go to Roedean JJ?
salla...we had some of the Roedean girls come up to the London Teaching Hospitals to study Medicine.....some of them, not all, were real "goers"

I was invited to go to a play at Roedean, all in French and it was the most boring evening I have ever spent.
My BF gets all excited about the idea of Roedean girls.... We moored in Brighton Marina last year - he kept his telescope (binoculars) firmly fixed on the 'School On The Hill' - more than likely hoping to see the netball team.....
salla..LOL

No, salla ... not Roedean.

It just came back to mind because there's a thread going at the mo in which the poster has pigeon-holed someone by reference to here they live (the "dobbing in" thread).

This "bias" thing seems to works on so many different levels.
I absolutely agree with you JJ - reverse discrimination & all that jazz.

Sqad - it's the navy blue gym knickers that do it....

Salla ... they were probably watching him back from their own telescope in the dorms.
My friend went to Roedean - and boy! Is she a girl?!!!! Your boyfriend has good taste.
Question Author
Roedean do turn out very confident girls.
I remember being told I was unlikely to get a job once because I didn't go to the right kind of school.

Out of all the people I'd known go for a similar position at the same firm previously, the only one who didn't get it out of the main selection was the one who didn't go to a private school.
I wouldn't be surprised at all !!!

Mind you - I wasn't jealous - I was too busy discretely eyeing up the harbour master... What's sauce for the goose is saucy for the gander ;-)
Where is this Roedean place (just so I can avoid it, as it would be wrong of me to go near a place where so many young ladies would instantly fall in love with me and then have their hearts broken when I explain I only have eyes for one!)

Just my point, I think, Jenna ...

Apparent discrimination on the basis of "school attended" ...

... rather than "results achieved"

Shouldn't that be unlawful ?
Gobby Gordon doesn't like his electorate and calls them 'bigots', he dislikes public school educated as they show him up for the uncouth, bullying individual he is!

You're right JJ, there is discrimination on the point of 'which school' - lets keep it & not make it illegal....fun to be had on that.
It should be, yes.

bob ... just so you can avoid it ... if you drive east out of Brighton, it's the big gothic building sitting up on your left, overlooking the sea.

It is really lovely. Any girl would be happy going there.
But surely that's part of the point you're making Jayne. Private schools have a habit of turning out confident people - and I see nothing wrong with having confident, well-educated, people in government. As for making another law against discrimination, personally I think we have too many of those already. If we carry on trying to please everyone, we will eventually end up climbing up our own bottoms, because when you please one, you offend another. Maybe we should just make a law stating that everyone must use a bit a common sense. :o)

Oh. Okay, naomi.

=0)
JJ One must be very careful here.

The non-private girl described by jenna, may not have had equal results and also at interviews one is assessing the whole candidate for the job not just academic attainment.

There is now an undesirable tendency, in my opinion, for some Universities and Colleges to bias AGAINST the Public School candidate.
