How to Ask a Question in The AnswerBank

15:37 Mon 24th May 2010 |

The AnswerBank is a great place to learn new things, debate opinions and to find answers to those burning questions.

If you are a member of the AnswerBank already you are likely to have already asked and answered a few questions. Still, there are a few who find they have a little trouble getting their question out there to the masses.

What you need to ask a question on The AnswerBank:

1. You must be registered with the AnswerBank. If you're not registered, please register here

2. You must also be logged in. If you're not logged in, log in here.

3. You must have a question!

That’s it!

With your question in mind you must attempt to choose the most appropriate section. Each section of The AnswerBank has its own set of users who check back often – so asking a question in the right category is quite important!

The “Topics,” bar can be found on the left-hand side of the screen. Clicking the “Topics,” button in the header will show you all categories and sub-categories available.

If you have a question about starting a family history it is best to look under “History,” and then in the sub-category “Geneology.”

Clicking on “Geneology,” will take you to that category.

At the top of the page, below the search bar, there should be a tab reading “Ask Your Question.” Here is where you enter your question for the community to consider and reply to.

Left-clicking in the “Title,” field should drop out the whole Question submission form.

Enter the title to your question, giving users an idea what your question is about.  For example: “Surname Flibberson in Dundee area.”

In the section below titled “Details,” you should enter further details, such as what sort of information you are looking for. Offering what knowledge you already have is also a good idea. For example: “I know my family changed their name from Flibberson in the 1800’s and at this time they lived in the Dundee area. Where is the best place for me to start looking for further details?”

Once you are happy with the wording of your question you should click the “Submit Question” button.

Your question has been submitted!

You should now see your question in the “Most Recent” tab displayed below “Ask Your Question” box. In time users should be able to offer advice, knowledge and further leads.
