Nuisance advertising telephone calls
17 Answers
Hope this is in the right section. Does anyone know who you complain to regarding the prolific pre-recorded telephone advert calls that are coming through please? I am fed up with them and they are most from big companies such as LLoyds TSB (today), Barclays Bank, Nat West Bank etc. All begin with O845/4 numbers which I find out by dialling 1471 to find the last caller number.
I am fed up with getting these calls and even more so because you can't speak to the caller (scream) and sometimes when you put the phone down, pick it up again, the recorded message is still chattering away.
Thanks if you can help as I really would like to try and stop them if I can. I don't want caller ID either as you have to pay for that from BT.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.If you sign up to the Telephone Preference Service, in theory you should stop receiving these calls. However it's not fool proof. I have both home and work signed up and we still get these calls. The difference is when you get one, you can report it to the TPS who will then (I believe) take action (where possible) against the company calling. I report every single call like this.
Register here for the Telephone Preference Service and all your callers will stop.

Do the same with the Mail Preference Service and that'll put the end to any junk mail too.

Thanks for your replies. I see with the links there are two TPS you've given, one free and the other you pay for. I really do not want to pay for something when it's not my "fault" I'm getting these calls <spit>. I was wondering if there is a complaints procedure where I can give details of the numbers and calls received and where they can take matters further? Has anyone ever done this?
TPS doesn't stop all calls by any means. We've got called display, it's only £3 a month and worth every penny. Everyone we know is in the phonebook on it so if a call comes through I don't recognise, I never ever answer it. Simple. Also, we can see a list of all missed calls, and who from, if we've been out.
We get a lot of International or unavailable calls or 08 numbers, DPS doesn't stop these. If it was important they'd leave a message - they never do.

I've just looked at the FAQ's on the TPS site and seen that the recorded calls I'm receiving won't be reduced because those who leave recorded phone messages must obtain prior consent of the subscriber before they can make that call.
If a subscriber gets a recorded phone message they haven't agreed to there may have been a breach of the regulations. Well I certainly haven't agreed to receive these calls that's for sure. They say on the site that you can complain directly to the Information Commissioner's Office if you haven't given prior permission but often these calls come from abroad which are difficult to stop!!! Seems it's no win situation for the subscriber then - sigh!

I repeat that caller display is FREE with BT if you opt-in to "Privacy at Home".
