i bought a disk off ebay full of ebooks, and ive taken all the ones i know or like off it, but seems a shame not to check out the rest...might be a gem in there...but obviously there is way too many to just delve in and hope i find something...take years, hehe
i know its a long list, but hoping people just scan over it and offer some sort of comment if they know someone

Why don't you download a few pot luck styly? If they're rubbish, just simply delete, it's not like they've cost you anything.
I've found that's the beauty of my kindle, I've downloaded all sorts of books as they're free (as I'm a tight northerner- refuse to buy any) and a few have been rubbish, but a good many have ranged from readable to bloody good. A lot of them, i wouldn't have chosen from say the library or bookshop, but as they're free, ive given them a whirl.

Still don't see how Pullman is similar to Pratchett apart from being "Fantasy". It's a bit like saying someone who enjoys "Flipper" might like "Jaws" as they're both about sea creatures.
Anyway:
Alfred Bester - experimental (for the time) SF, The Demolished Man and The Stars My Destination (Tiger! Tiger!) particularly good.
China Mieville - the Bas Lag novels (weird fantasy) starting with Perdido Street Station brilliant (the third less so) and his YA Un Lun Dun is great.
Dan Simmons - SF/horror. A bit variable. The Hyperion books are good, as are Carrion Comfort and Children of the Night and others, but some a bit poor.
Douglas Preston - easy-to-read techno thrillers.
More later if time!

Continued...
F. Paul Wilson - mainly horror. "The Keep" is superb (miles better than the film) and the others I have read have been good.
Frank Herbert - SF. "Dune" is great, the sequels start going downhill.
George R. R. Martin - one of my favourite authors. Mainly fantasy/SF. "A Song of Ice and Fire" has just had its first book made into the first season of "Game of Thrones" and is his best known work. The only one of his I'm not keen on is "The Armageddon Rag". "Fevre Dream" is well worth checking out.
Richard Matheson - "I Am Legend" is better than any of the film adaptations; I've read most of his stuff and there are rarely any clinkers.
Robert R. McCammon - horror in the Stephen King mould.
William Gibson - the man who put cyberpunk on the map. His early novels are excellent, but then he goes a bit "literary" for my tastes.
I've read many more of the authors on the list and intend to try others (and know a fair amount by reputation) but those are the people I'd suggest are worth checking out from personal experience.

As others have said none of them jump out as being a barrel of laughs but from the list would recommend-
Alice Sebold- The Lovely Bones
Audrey Niffenegger- The Time Travellers Wife
Cormac McCarthy- The Road (not read it but boyfriend raves about it)
Emma Donoghue- Room
Markus Zusak- The Book Thief
Also by Markus Zusak- The Messenger
Looking at that list all of these are far from funny but they are all really good!

I don't see many there who would be regarded as humourous. David Sedaris is very witty, Sarah Silverman is a comedienne, but she can be quite crude so it depends on your taste. I think Janet Evanovich's books are quite lighthearted (for crime novels). I think that's as close as you'll get with that list though.
