I have an iPhone 4 with a contract that gives me 750MB of data per month.
I use the phone to access the internet via the 3G service and slower services (E).

I also have an iPad and that has a 3G card with Vodafone with a rolling 1 month contract for 1GB of data.

Being clever I have canceled the £10 a month iPad contract and figured I could turn on the Hotspot feature on the iPhone and then connect the iPad to this service and go via the iPhone to access the internet.

Just got phone bill and ouch !
They have been charging me £5 a day (500mb limit) to use the phone in this way and connect to the internet.
I called them and said I was using "Tethering" or something.
Well Now I know lol

So my cost cutting Idea cost me £20 ...thank goodness I got the Bill when I did and saw these charges.

You live and learn and they say :-)

I did ask for a refund , due to me now understanding they chanrged like this and my business bill can be on average £100 to £300 a month with them.
But they refused.
so for the sake of £20 , I will move by business phone when the contract expires in June.

If I had a customer , who had been with me for 16 years plus and was being billed for on average £100 to £300 a month (I make a lot of calls in Europe), as a show of good will I would have waved the £20.
But hey ho ...if that's there way of doing business , then ...one hacked off customer and one less customer from June :-)
When you tell them you're shifting in June, I'm pretty sure you'll get your £20 back and some.
... if you use an android phone as a wireless access point for other devices (iPad, laptop whatever) good old Vodafone has no way at all of telling what you are up to - so your money saving plan would work for you (as it does for me).

It's only the nanny software in the iPhone that lets the network know that you are 'tethering'.
agreed. they will offer you everything short of ownership of the company to keep your custom
