I was driving down the motorway today when a song i love came on so I turned it up, glanced down and saw my speed had crept up.

Why do we do this?

Think I heard some were it had been proven that if you listen to classical music in the car your driving would be at a calmer pace.

Not sure about that but just read an article that says that if we sing along to music, (okay just to listen), then we are more likely to have an accident. For personal experience the other day I was responding to an Italian language tape and missed the turning to my street.
I can't say that I notice a difference.
I agree because if I listen to rock, Queen, Rod Stewart etc I drive fast. Joan Baez or classical slows me down.
Where does this notion come from which says that all classical music is quiet and slow...?
gness dosn't need any music.

There all very good replies thanks. That artical doesn't surprise me one bit, that's exactly what happens.

Ok....Listening to the classical music of my choice which is quiet and slow. Hi Mark.

I read it, that if you listen to classical or light music Instead of let's say hard rock it will help you relax and slow your driving down.
Ah but for some people, rock music IS relaxing... I have Nirvana in the car atm and I'm completely chilled when I drive.

Do you turn it up when your favourite song comes on? And does your driving not change at all? Maybe I'm easily distracted Erin, xx
I did used to notice that when I used to travel into Liverpool St staion for work if they were playing a march over the tannoy evryone walked briskly and much faster than when they played something slower like a waltz.
Question Author
Well yes never thought of that, but when you go to the gym if you've got your fave music on you work out better.

My music is always loud! Lol! And I really don't notice a change =s Maybe my driving is already erratic enough! Haha!
I agree with Mark. The Headless Horseman for instance - fancy galloping along with him!!
Oi!!! Tony! x
I'm worse than any boy racer when it comes to playing loud music in the car. When I listen to rock I probably do drive faster because in my head I am a teenager again...and invincible
Always have a Leonard Cohen CD at the ready if you're about to go through a load of speed cameras !
I found that about classical music. Once, a long time ago, when I was "white van man" if I had a bad day I would always switch to Classic FM on the journey home just to calm down.
