Ue O Muite Aruko (I Look Up When I Walk) in Japan, Sukiyaki in the West.
The music was by Hachidai Nakamura, and the lyrics by Rokusuke Ei, who is said to have written this movingly sad song of loneliness after his heart was broken by the actress Meiko Nakamura. The Japanese translation is much sadder than the English lyrics for the song in many covers.
It was released in Japan in 1961, and became a No. 1 in the US in 1963, ousting "It's my Party" from the top slot.
It's been covered over 60 times, from Acker Bilk to Bob Dylan to Styx to Taste of Honey (1981 I think).
