Really sorry had no idea where to put this question, I've been looking at a plot on an industrial site and the advert says 'the site is fenced and scalping surfaced' what does scalping surfaced mean? I just brings up a load of garbage about your scalp on Google?

It just means the surface has been covered in stone, a bit like this http://www.hampshiregardensupplies.co.uk/shopimages/products/normal/scalps_type1_main.jpg

Try 'How it works' or 'Home & Garden'

There are some very helpful and knowledgable builders who visit there

I'm pretty sure that they use scalping as railway ballast if that's any help to you.
A better picture here, showing what it looks like after it's been flattened down

It's basically what is used as a sub base before building starts.
From the British Standards Institute Glossary of Highway Engineering Terms, 1967, (as cited on the Oxford English Dictionary website):
"Scalpings, hard material extracted as being unsuitable for crushing and screening"
I think the others have covered it, Watery. Scalpings are a quarry product.
Standard sizes are 40mm or 75mm to dust. Sometimes called 40mm down, or 75mm down.

It's simply that, for 40mm down, crushed stone is sieved through a 75mm mesh. This lets everything through up to a maximum of 75mm.

Because of its make-up, it's ideal for rolling into a hard, even surface. What they are really telling you, is that the ground has been hardcored, then rolled with scalpings to give a good, cheap unfinished surface....... unlike concrete or tarmac. You can finish it, or leave it.
^^^ errr........ twaddle alert ^^^

75mm down is put through a 75mm screen ........... :o(((
