Firstly it was the Jaffa cake, now the chocolate snowball has fallen foul of judge's high standards of what makes a cake and what makes a biscuit. What do you think?

Like in the Jaffa Cake fiasco the company have been charging VAT for years. They now want a refund of the VAT. Will they return the VAT to the customers? No!

Can't open the link but if a snowball is made in the same way as their tea cakes and has a biscuit base then it doesn't help, especially when it's called a cake. I dunno but if the makers call something a cake then it should be judged as a cake.

I think your link doesn't work!

That's ^^^^ better
If it goes soft when it's left out of the packet it's a biscuit, and if it goes hard it's a cake :-)
snowballs deff cakes.................lovely with ice cream.
It's a case of make silly rules and you get silly disputes.
Soft and pliable, then its a cake, harder with more of a crunch texture then it's a biscuit.
>>> if the makers call something a cake then it should be judged as a cake.

That's hardly right as any company could name their biscuits as cakes but that does not make them cakes.

It is all to do with VAT as value added tax is payable on chocolate-covered biscuits, but not on chocolate-covered cakes

This is why they called them a Jaffa Cake even though they are obviously a biscuit (even though a court ruled they are a cake so no VAT is paid on them).

If no VAT is added it makes them cheaper for people to buy.
McVities invented jaffa cakes in the 1920s, long before VAT
What about Pontefract Cakes? Are they cakes or biscuits?
Pontefract cakes come straight from Satan's bottom & Jaffa Cakes are the produce of his legion of imps - yeeeeeeeeuck!
Kendal mint cake - what's that all about then?
I thought the comparison was whether snowballs were sweets (confectionery) or cakes.
To my mind they are clearly cakes ...far too big to be sweets.
If it was cakes or biscuits, whoever thought they might even possibly qualify as bicuits needs their head examining. There's nothing remotely biscuity about them.
Hi humbersloop.....Kendall mint cake as in 'a cake of chocolate'....or is that a Scottish expression ?

I'm with you, Methyl
hi lady, not heard that expression before

anything involving dessicated coconut is a work of evil

.....and what about Eccles cakes? They should be Eccles pies 'cos they have pastry around them.
