Pronunciation Of 'ikea'
For years I have, and all my friends, relatives colleagues (possibly enemies too) have been pronouncing this as 'Eye-Kia'.
Now
from the recent spate of advers it appeaars that the Swedish sounding gentelman says it should be 'Ick-ear'.
Whose right!
(same as Nestles - rhymes with trestles - is now 'Nest-lay' and 'Marathon' is now 'Snickers'!!!)

As a follow-on from my response re Braun/Brown, the same applies to Kärcher. The 'a' in the name has an umlaut above it, which means it should be pronounced (roughly) as 'ay'. Also, the 'ch' should be pronounced as in Johann Sebastian BaCH or LoCH Lomond, not as the 'ch' at either end of 'church'.
Yet, the company now advertises its products here as 'archer' with a 'k' in front of it. Braun and Kärcher, at least, have had the sense to accept that, if you can't beat 'em, you might just as well join 'em!

I know Nestles is an old one but it does seem like every so often companies change their pronunciation for no apparent reason (Hi-un-dye cars are now Hundies?)
A colleage referred to MFI as 'Made for Effin Idiots' or as suppository furniture - cos you put it up yourself - so Eye-Key-er can do the same.
P.S. Hate there shops too. Find what you want and then spend 3 hours in the warehose looking for it

But they wouldn't have said that when the New Testament was written, as they'd have spoken Ancient Greek rather than Δημοτική.

I remember when I heard how "Lowenbrau" should be properly pronounced and have always been in a quandary about pronouncing it the proper way in pubs or the dumbed down way: LEU-VEN-BROY (the "R" is enunciated from the back of the throat).
The same goes for "Zyweic", I pronounced it properly in a pub once (after being taught by a Pole) and was corrected with something incorrect!
