I stopped driving 20 years ago,I wondered what sort of measures might be in place to stop the criminally minded from obtaining a car with finance and then selling it by putting an advert written on the back of a fag-packet in a corner shop window or in a local news paper using only a mobile phone number,there are still "Arfur Daleys" around.What legal protection is there for the law abiding car buyer ??

Cars on finance are listed and can be checked via the HPI register.

Well the buyer can have it HPI ( or similar ) checked, that would tell you if there is any finance owed on it and whether it has had an insurance claim on it and if it has ever been reported stolen.
