Why is it so involved to add an avatar.

Why cant you add a picture to a post directly - Youtube link but no pics

probably being very dense but wondered what the reasons were.

because that is the way that the forum is set up and to add those other facilities would be expensive if possible at all. I don't find gravatar involved.
