Until recently, it has been human nature to assume that any aliens we contact would be benign. Only when the film Independence Day was released did the notion of seriously hostile alien species come to be considered.
Close Encounters liked to think (quite rightly!) that the official government bodies like that CIA would want to run any contact because they 'know best'.
But the reality is - we have no idea what, if anything is out there, and there is no reason to assume that waving a proverbial flag at them as they zoom past is actually a good idea.
What if they are invisible, communicate by smells or colours, or regard the human race in the way we regard farm animals?
Anything is out there, so yes, I would agree with the prof, we should maybe just keep quiet!

not really, andy hughes: there were lots of unpleasant alien invasion movies in the 1950s, to accompany fears of a commie invasion of the USA. As I recall it, it wasn't until Close Encounters that people started thinking of friendly aliens again.

War of the worlds instantly sprung to my mind.
[i] Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying [i]
Arthur C. Clarke
I think its very arrogant as a species to believe we're alone in the universe.
Given a choice I think we should keep quiet equally as much I wouldn't dance around in a bull ring only wearing red briefs.
