I usually agree with Stephen Hawking.
They might solve our problems.
Or they might cause more problems.
They're all ready here according to some people. If they're that intelligent, why do they always abduct idiots? :-)

yeah , in the dead of night in a field hundreds of miles from the nearest neighbour
It's how many are on AB bothers me some days.
Stephen Hawking has a vivid imagination.
And a brilliant mind
Agree with Stephen Hawking?? Short of a peer review proving otherwise then probably yes!
Seriously though i've encountered numerous advanced civilizations out there in my missions .

They are so advanced that they are not interested in the backward inhabitants of our world
It does raise an interesting point.

Until recently, it has been human nature to assume that any aliens we contact would be benign. Only when the film Independence Day was released did the notion of seriously hostile alien species come to be considered.

Close Encounters liked to think (quite rightly!) that the official government bodies like that CIA would want to run any contact because they 'know best'.

But the reality is - we have no idea what, if anything is out there, and there is no reason to assume that waving a proverbial flag at them as they zoom past is actually a good idea.

What if they are invisible, communicate by smells or colours, or regard the human race in the way we regard farm animals?

Anything is out there, so yes, I would agree with the prof, we should maybe just keep quiet!
not really, andy hughes: there were lots of unpleasant alien invasion movies in the 1950s, to accompany fears of a commie invasion of the USA. As I recall it, it wasn't until Close Encounters that people started thinking of friendly aliens again.

After watching Captain Scarlett and the Mysterons I am convinced that if we met aliens we would either kill them all or we will all be killed.

I think that the aliens may wait until we are all civilised beings before approaching us.

War of the worlds instantly sprung to my mind.

[i] Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying [i]
Arthur C. Clarke

I think its very arrogant as a species to believe we're alone in the universe.
Given a choice I think we should keep quiet equally as much I wouldn't dance around in a bull ring only wearing red briefs.

so as long as there are people still drinking tea out of their saucers, we're okay, wolf?
Yes I agree with him, I don't understand how anyone could not think it sensible.
I'm also trying to think of a film when Aliens came to earth and were not hostile. Close Encounters as mentioned, ET maybe and Starman?? But they came by accident rather than intent.
