a laudable policy, but can he deliver? whilst many see parking charges as a tax on the sick, what's the alternative? most hospitals started charging to stop non hospital users blagging space at the expense of the sick, and to ration a limited resource to those who really need it; and yet at my hospital, which charges £5 for 4 hours, there are still no available spaces for much of the day. how will abolishing charges make more spaces available?

In order to pay for this he is proposing to increase tax on private medical insurance, thereby forcing those who can no longer afford private insurance due to the tax hike to depend upon the NHS for their health care. More people equates to fewer parking spaces – and a greater burden on the NHS. Labour isn’t big on thinking.

While I agree that parking charges are harsh, I think something has to be done to manage the issue of misuse or under provision of parking at hospitals. Its all very well crowding extra facilities and clinics into hospital spaces but when the patients and staff can’t park to run/access the facilities, and there is no real alternative,there isn’t much point. I don’t usually make political comment on here but I think this is a bit of a Corbyesque comment......make a sweeping statement that will sound good but leaves addressing the underlying issue to others......

could the parking permits be issued rapidly enough to accommodate a visit to A&E by granny, who's been taken there by her grandson (who will probably spend the next hour driving round and round while granny totters, solo stylee, into A&E)?

OK mushie, grandson has to pay for the first ticket and can be given a long-term one if granny has to stay for longer than a certain time. Hopefully, if prices are increased, there will be spaces available for him, so no need to drive round and round looking for a space. People booked in for organised treatment could be sent a pre-dated one with the appointment.
It's the usual electioneering - make a promise that affects masses of voters and promise them something they really want, and can have if they vote for you.
The fine print, like actually making it work (it won't for reasons already outlined) is nothing to worry about now.
The Tories are promising migration down to 'the tens of thousands ...' and that's not going to happen either.
Sadly, there seems no sanction for failure to deliver on the promises that get a party elected. I think AOG's 'fraud' proposal should be investigated.

hi mushroom abolising hospital charges will not free up any spaces my local hospital charges, and robbers who look after it have a contract which expires 2020 so all that happens they increase every year and you pay it or you dont, we recently had a call out doctor ticketed for parking in an emergency space, loads of people get the bus because you cant find a space after 9 30 am if the charges were to stop people who got the bus would now take their car leading to the same situation cheers

I have very little knowledge of what happens in England, but here in Wales, some Hospitals charge and some don't. I have been visiting a very sick brother in the Heath Hospital, in Cardiff since Feb 1st. It costs £2:20 for 4 hours, which isn't too bad and allows plenty of time for visiting.
In contrast my local Hospital here in Swansea doesn't make any charge, although getting a parking place after about 09:00 in the morning, is next to impossible.

The alternative is to ensure sufficient free parking space at each hospital. Visiting is part of the treatment/recuperation process, it should not be an opportunity to cash grab from the vulnerable to supplement inadequate funding.

er, no "they" won't. supermarkets own their own car parks, and make their own commercial decisions about their use. invariably (but not always) they're free at point of use, but capital premises costs and maintenance of same will have been factored in to shop prices of goods. many hospitals are on cramped sites in towns and cities where there's no room to make car parks bigger; new "out of town" hospitals where space is not at a premium have nevertheless had to balance adequate parking provision with their green obligation to encourage public transport use.

Sounds like some hospitals are badly sited and need a long term plan to move.
Never trust what authority tells you. When I worked for my last employer they used to insist they could not supply more parking as the government wouldn't let them and there was nothing they could do about it. Now they've basically moved off the site, miracles ! A multi-story car par has appeared. Against the law one assumes.
