Madonna's new single. Not the original 'Material Girl' anymore?

Why is it that a proven artist capable of writing original material has resorted to using samples of other peoples (in this case Abba) work.

To me It just has 'I'm too lazy' or 'I should have given up the job years ago' written all over it.

We read in our newspapers (ok, not a good source for truth I know) that she has to be driven to the gym and park outside only to recieve parking tickets, so maybe the lazyness is rubbing off in her ability to produce original music.

Am I alone on this thought?

Less risk - they choose a popular song and ride on the back of its success.

Madonna is not lazy, she just knows that the current trend in popular music is to sample other pop artists. Look at Mylo and all those other dance music artists that are making a KILLING. Not to mention Hip-Hop artists who rule the charts in America - where its all about sampling.

Madonna is doing the same thing she's done countless times before, making money on popular trends - all her previous "phases" - the cowboy hat, religious controversy, etc..etc..

the difference being that she normally sets trends not follows them.the song is catchy but all thanks to the abba riff.

I think samples can actually add to the attraction of the "new" record. Also, some excellent songwriters have used samples in their writing/recording - e.g. Kirsty MacColl, Elvis Costello.
