Movie Title and other info

Saw a fragment of what was an interesting exploration of the world of a "confidence man" (or "scheister" or whatever). I think it was a much older film (40s?50s?) so TV version may have been B&W. (Cannot actually recall) A female co-star played a reporter/writer - was doing an in-depth investigative piece on how this guy lived. Some scenes/exploits included; boldly pretending to be someone else at a hotel and then getting the key from the front desk to use the room for a couple of hours, picking up somebody else's cheque at a money-by-wire place, generally living off the land defrauding others. If anyone has info on this one - much obliged. I would love to find it and get a copy or see the whole thing!! (many thanks for any replies)
