Shrink-Wrapped Swedes At Morrison's

I am several days into a conversation with Morrison's supermarkets about this. They are a good supermarket, local meat etc.. BUT I wanted to make a stew the other week and needed a swede. Fine, there were lots of them to choose from. All shrink-wrapped in plastic with a price label. I thought 'WHY'?

So I bought it and went to customer services and asked 'Why?' Does anyone not peel a swede? They are not exactly delicate and, in fact, will rot if kept wrapped in plastic.

The lady did not know, but agreed, and I left feedback. I received a very nice letter today about all Morrison's are doing, which said they minimised wrapping. So I rang the phone number and asked for the lady concerned. A pleasant conversation later I am assured that there is a board meeting next week on this subject. Please, if anyone feels like buying a swede will you add your voice? I was also assured that I could take my own containers for fish, deli stuff etc. and on top of that I could divest all extraneous packaging and leave it with the cashier who would recycle it. Thought I would let you know. Bit long, sorry. Thanks.

I wrote to Morrisons about 8 or 9 years ago and asked them why they felt the need to shrink wrap every cucumber and avacado. I got the usual response about how they are doing their bit for the environment. Nothing will change

I think with the currentthinking on plastic you might get more joy than 237SJ did.

I watched a food programme and the expert said that veg wrapped in plastic stays fresher for longer.

Good on you for actually going and saying something, there are things that just don't need all the wrapping and protection aren't there.

Good idea though to be able to supply your own container. I would be bogged down with Tupperware!!

If we consumers do nothing and expect no change, then nothing will change.

Things will only change if we tell the bosses and corporates that we will boycott their stores if they do not do what we want.

We have so much power to change they way they behave, if only we used it.

My local Morrisons don't stock the local school jumper colour and wrote to head office and made a suggestion to that effect in store.

I too got Plymouth and they said they were making the local purchaser aware.

Two years later... still no grey jumpers lol

It's possible that Morrison's might actually take notice of your complaint.

After all, they changed the recorded message at their self-service tills when I started a campaign to hear some proper English. (The woman's voice used to say "Morrison's More card excepted", instead of "accepted", whenever someone scanned their loyalty card. When enough people complained, it finally got changed).

Don't be defeatist 237! As a schoolgirl I worked on stalls in Bradford markets and I met Ken Morrison. If anything of his spirit remains then they will listen. At the very least we know that we can remove unnecessary packaging and leave it with the cashier. If enough people speak they will listen. I could give the phone number and the poor lady concerned and you could all ring her. Shall I?

I'm not a fan of Swedes...but wherever I shop they seem to be wrapped.
I sometimes buy "ripe and ready" 2 packs of avocados. M and S has added an extra, firm plastic cover to the wrap plus container they sit in. Why?
Seems shops are adding more, not reducing anything.

Where are you supposed to remove the unwanted packaging...at the till...before you get there? Just wondering. It would be far better if the damn stuff was reduced, period.

I`ve been on the case about plastics for years. Years ago there was a lot of hype about how paper products were decimating the trees. Look what we have now..

Pasta, the lady I spoke to said 'Unwrap it at the till.' I said that I thought that this might cause a lot of hold-ups. In the end we agreed that to pick up a basket after the till process, fill it with discarded wrappings and leave it might be the least disruptive. T.B.H. this is a bit of a faff and I wonder if standing at the checkout unpeeling stuff might have more impact?

Of course, there's the issue of...can you even get the wrapping OFF? Especially the tight plastic stuff. I always need something sharp at home.
