Face Shield.

I just cannot get on with the face masks I've bought. They make my face feel really hot and I feel I can't breathe. A neighbour has suggested I buy a face shield like these from ebay, but do you still have to wear a mask as well? what do you need it for? where were you thinking of using it? As far as I know you don't "have" to wear a mask unless you are going on public transport and even then a "face covering" is specified, meaning you could use a light scarf

ps my parents have them, but never use them as they are so cumbersome to take out and uncomfy. Plus they look ridiculous!

They are for splash protection for the eyes they don't protect from inhaled droplets
So you do need a mask or fabric face covering. I'd go for two layers of a light scarf if you don't want to wear a mask.

bednobs as I have been shielding, I have been very nervous about venturing out, but last Friday I put on a mask to go to a supermarket for the first time in months and although the floor was marked with arrows going one way and places you had to stand in a queue, the number of people walking towards me against the arrows was ridiculous and when I was in the queue, a man stood so close behind me, he even brushed my arm as he lent froward to look at something on the shelf where I was standing. The mask made me feel so uncomfortable, I couldn't wait to get back in my car to take it off.

Thanks Rowanwitch, I'll have a look what I have in the way of scarves, but i just think I will feel the same way about having my nose and mouth covered.

I have to go for a hospital scan on the 14th of this month and I know I will have to wear a mask for that.

The definition of a 'face covering' in the Coronavirus Regulations is this [quote]: “face covering” means a covering of any type which covers a person’s nose and mouth.

So, as I read it, a face shield alone does NOT meet the requirements of the Regulations.

However the law only requires you to wear a face covering on public transport. Everywhere else it's entirely voluntary (unless, of course, a particular business makes it a condition of entry to their premises that you must wear a face covering).

I've also (theoretically) been 'shielding', due to my ongoing chemotherapy (which, according to the hospital staff places me in the highest risk category there is). However I've been doing some limited supermarket shopping and I'll be doing some more this evening. I've sometimes worn a face mask in Morrison's and sometimes not.

However, as I've never come closer than FIVE metres (not just one or two) from any other shopper or member of staff (other than the checkout assistants, whom I can usually avoid anyway by using the self-service tills), it doesn't really seem to matter that much. That's because I deliberately go shopping during the last hour of trading, when there are never more than half a dozen other shoppers in one of Morrison's largest stores. (There were just 3 of us on my last visit).

I feel the same Barsel. I have sinus problems and allergies and feel like i'm suffocating. I haven't shopped yet because of it. Mr APC shops and we get deliveries. Scarves were just as bad. knowing me I would get a panic attack!

Chris, it was 5.30pm when I went to Morrisons, and it wasn't very busy, but that didn't stop people from not following the arrows and walking towards me and standing right behind me. I had to go for a blood test at the hospital a few weeks ago, and there was someone on the door making sure you are wearing a mask, and you had to wash your hands with the liquid provided. As the hospital was only open for blood tests and X-rays, there was only one other patient before me, and as soon as she went in, I lowered my mask. The next thing, someone who works there came marching up and told me to put my mask back on. I just cannot stand them covering my nose and mouth.I will have to try and concoct something up myself unless someone who has actually worn a face shield can tell me what that's like.

An asthmatic friend of mine had the same problem on a flight recently. Masks are really not good for people with breathing ptoblems. I don't know what the answer is.

I'd regard 5.30pm as one of Morrison's busier periods. I'd certainly expect to see at least 30 or 40 shoppers (as a minimum) in their Ipswich store at that time. At 9pm there are never more than 5 or 6.

Chris I wasn't shopping in Morrisons I was collecting a click and collect from e-bay.At the moment I'm still having deliveries from Tesco but if my experience at Morrison is anything to go by, I'll keep having it delivered. I really mean about if I go somewhere where I feel I would feel safer with a face covering that isn't a mask. I really am dreading going for a scan on the 14th as I just don't think I could keep it on for that amount of time.

I know this has been done ad finitum on here but pretty sure the science background remains that masks stop you passing the virus on but little to stop you catching it. I do think many are misled about that fact and think wearing a mask protects them.

I hope I never have to wear a mask, I have tried one on and it makes me feel claustrophobic and panicky.
