Which male and female singers have your favourite voices? My favourite male singing voices are Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Nat King Cole, John Lennon, and (though I appreciate this voice is very Marmite) Bob Dylan. My favourite female singing voices are Shirley Bassey, Stacey Kent, Susanna Hoffs, Linda Ronstadt, and Tammy Wynette

Don't think it's a case of favourite singers, per se, more a singer being right for the song - perhaps with the exception of the late, great Freddie Mercury who had the most acrobatic of voices. No-one can belt out Black Sabbath songs like Ozzy Osborne, ditto Thin Lizzy and Phil Lynott, Genesis and Peter Gabriel, to name just a few. Songs written by Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan only sound 'right' when sung by those two. Even now, Dylan's voice is more a 'rasp' but he's just released a new album of songs which , imho, is quite brilliant but would not sound as good if someone else sang them in a fresh, clear voice.
As for female singers, I guess the two who have left the most impression on me are Yvonne Elliman and Alison Moyet. Both have great voices and do put a lot of emotion into their work.

Ken, in response to what you wrote about Dylan and Cohen, I find that's the case with a lot of great songwriters with less than great voices. Tom Waits, Dr Feelgood, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop all spring to mind.

Mozz, when I first discovered I could 'burn' my own CDs, Beefheart's 'Mirror Man' was one of the first on my list:-) Should have seen my kids' faces when they heard me playing it. Priceless :-)
