Beds

As some of you know, when my husband was with me, we had no option but to have single beds. Space being limited our twin beds were each side of the room. I hated facing the wall but, I'm now able to arrange a bigger bed as I'm sure my large body is going to end up on the floor now my single bed is more central in the room..
I need a bigger bed. I'm wondering about a 4ft bed as opposed to a double, 4'6".
The twin beds are memory foam and very comfy. My previous double was a gel & sprung mattress with firm sides.
Does anyone have a preference on a comfortable mattress.
I can't get to a store to test them. Any suggestions?

Get a one with a pillow top, but if possible, go to a shop and try out various types before you buy. I have to say, Hypnos mattresses are the best I've ever slept on.

a lot of mattress makers allow you to try them at home - for 200 nights in the case of Emma

when I bought my bed and mattress TOB, I was housebound and my firend brought me over to the furniture store in her car but then the beds were upstairs (no lift/escalator) so, because she knew me so well and what I liked, she lay on all the mattresses and beds like a little goldilocks and bought the one she thought I would be happy with, great choice and I am still snug in it so if you could get someone close to you to maybe try out beds, take photos and send them to you and choose on your behalf, that might be a good idea. I know it's hard when you cannot really get out and go for the bed that's best suited for you if it is the 4"
I have tried loads of beds and bought quite a number of them over the years - it really does depend on what you like - you do need to lie on them Old bird.
I had a bad back when I bought my first bed and was told orthopaedic - I will never forget the hardness and swore never again. I bought another (maybe spring coil) and at the time it seemed ok but again - far too hard.
I got a soft mattress in Dreams about two years ago (bed actually) and it is hard enough for me. But I do believe if you have megabucks Dunlopillo is a lovely mattress. We had one in my last family home (double) - mother, my sister and I slept on it together for years - the best ever apart from the squashness LOL
