Which Books Do You Remember Having As A Child?

For me, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, The Water Babies, Brothers Grimm and Hans Anderson's fairy tales, and one my lovely friend at church gave me and with which I would never part - Treasures of the Snow by Patricia St John. That friend later became a missionary in Africa and was hacked to death in Zimbabwe.

I loved the 'Cherry' books by Will Scott. There are 14 of them, and I never managed to read them all. Would love to track them down, but they're pretty rare now, and expensive. Lovely illustrations by Lilian Buchanan, too.

That's very sad to read naomi, my sympathies for your loss.

Like a lot of chldren of my generation, Enid Blyton was the cornerstone of my reading as a child - everything from the Secret Seven, the 'Adventure' series, and the Malory Towers chronicles.

Of course they are all of their time, and don't stand up to rigorous scrutiny today, but i think any author that gets children reading is to be appluaded and supported.

Especially people like JK Rowling who have given opportunities for millions of children to enter the magic of reading, and she does not deserve the hostility she has endured for simply expressing a view to which she is entitled - but that's another debate.

Back to childhood reading, and I adored al the Noddy books. I never saw any racist undertones in having the Gollies as baddies, but as a child, I wouldn't because children don't think like that.

AH, thank you. I've never forgotten her. She was such a lovely gentle girl.

And I left Enid Blyton out. How very dare I when Noddy taught me to read! I used to get his books from the library. Loved my regular weekend visit. And moved on after Noddy to The Secret Seven, The Famous Five, etc - desperately wanted to be George when I was eight. Ann was such a wuss.

There were a lot less children authors around when I was growing up, but being an only child I was an avid reader, and still am today. I remember my Mum running upstairs because she could hear me crying when I read about Beth dying in Little Women!

Heidi, Lad,a Dog, all of Louisa May Alcott, Alice in Wonderland /Through the Looking Glass, Grimms Fairy Tales along with Aesop's Fables. Also the Bobbsey Twins, and Nancy Drew mystery series from the 30s-40s, and later Agatha Christie.
Lots are being poked from the far depths of my mind ;)

Depends how young you're talking I guess.... Janet and John with the red hats. Many Ladybird books... but for me 'The Twits' is a timeless classic.

I tried one Enid Blyton book but it was so far removed from my experience that I didn't bother with any more. I did like Noddy though.

My zmum would take me to the library on Saturday mornings and I would choose tales of Greek, Norse, Roman,Celtic myths. I also chose a science book of some sort. I wanted to become a scientist.

I also read all the Enid Blyton books but the one that stands out most from my childhood is The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I was spellbound by it and must have read it a dozen times as a child - and once or twice as an adult.

Most of the children's classics, little women, what Katy did etc, some early Dr Who novels, The day of the Bomb ( a story about children in Hiroshima). On the Oregon trail,( children separated from a wagon train)I myths and legends from around the world that introduced me to Anansi, the spider 'creature' , and from about 11 I was allowed into the adult library and worked my way through all the mythology books I could find, picking up the Iliad, and the Odyssey on the way, then the Zoo quest books, ..... Then I discovered science fiction and sword and sorcery....
