7 Tips To Start Building A Super Scissor...

My daughter has had an old (thankfully previously cancelled) Amex card that's been cloned by scammers and they have hacked her email address so she now has over 800 emails telling her she is subscribed to numerous companies. Because the card was already cancelled the hackers can't get any money off her but she's worried that she might be now subscribed to loads of companies IE Amazon, netflix etc cos the emails are saying she is and they want subscription money. How does she deal with this? Is there no other way round it but to have to start a new email account?. That would mean informing every contact which could take weeks. Can she ignore the subscriptions or does she have to tell every company she has been hacked? She's spoken to Amex and they have said cos it's cancelled there is no problem and she has lost no money. Any advice appreciated thanks.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.My suspicion is that the emails actually have nothing to do with the Amex card. i.e. they're not actually coming from Amazon, Netflix, etc but from scammers who're simply impersonating those companies in the hope that your daughter will hand over some money to them (and, in so doing, present them with her active card details).
Get your daughter to check the full headers for some of those emails. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she found that emails which appear to have come from Amazon, etc have actually been sent from Gmail addresses (or similar).
If your daugher does end up deciding to change her email account, I suggest setting one up with GMX

and then using the Mail Collector facility to get mail from her old account automatically forwarded to her new one. She'll then have plenty of time to let people in her contacts list know her new address before she finally disables Mail Collector. That way she won't miss any mail sent to her old address.
