Lousy Voiceovers

I do enjoy nice voices, men and women, and grating ones really bug me.

I am trying to enjoy reruns of 'Call The Baliffs', but I have to grit my teeth when the voiceover comes in.

Actor Paul Barber talks so slowly, it's like he's talking to someone who speaks English as a third language!

I think the programme makers can assume basic English on the part of their audience, so why not have their programme voiced by someone who can speak properly.

Things like thus bug me, but I'm probably in the minority.

Any thoughts?

It's a long time since I watched it so I just watched a bit of it on YouTube and yes, that blokes voice gets on my nerves too. Is he new to the programme?

Barsel - I think he was the original voice-over, and they wisely replaced him for subsequent series.

I can't stand what I call immature and high pitched female voices. Sounds like a 15yr old...not a voice that instills confidence. Wish I could remember the specific programmes...probably C4 lifestyle.

A lot of the continuity announcers between programmes on Channel Four are increasingly irritating screechy young women with either student Essex accents, or hyped up 'from da 'hood' nonsense that makes them sound like school children trying to sound grown up and hard.

I'm getting old, I know ...

There's a BBC continuity announcer who uses what sounds like an exaggerated 'gangsta' voice - oh, the joys of diversity.

And I've noticed that the continuity announcers now tell us their names - 'Hi, this is Duncan with you this evening' etc.  I'm not interested in what your ruddy name is!

I'm the same Andy.  I love nice voices and am attracted to people with nice voices.  Unfortunately, there are some really awful voices now on the media. I also like quiet but clear voices and voices where the words are completely understandable.

Can't stand those exaggerated drawn out  voices that young women tend to use these days!

....and don't get me started on the appalin' Beth Rigby, Sky's political editor, and her droppin' of Gs when she's speakin'.

I could easily fall in love with a  voice!

Me too.

Our local BBC radio station afternoon presenter, Liz Ellis, has an absolutely hypnotic voice. I sometimes lose the sense of what she is saying because I am entranced just by the sound of her speaking.

She was massively popular, so of course, they replaced her and shifted her to weekends!!

I could listen to this voice all day long😍

I too cannot stand the screeching adolescent females or the deep northern affectation. EE by gum lad sort of thing. I also dislike The pretended cheerful happy jolly chumminess.

I really enjoy the terms and conditions bursts at the end of radio ads. πŸ˜„

Crap poetry selling stuff is another fave.

David Hemmings had a great 'voice-over' voice. I remember him doing the narration on Rick Wakeman's album, Journey To The Centre Of The Earth. A brilliant album in it's own right - how could it not be given who the keyboard player was - but Hemmings' clear, precise diction served to enhance it.

I know the show and Paul Barber is acting under direction to talk like he's talking to 5 year old. He's been in many things and that's not his standard way of speaking. Blame the director/producer.

Travel adverts with dreadful fake accents (eg French/Italian etc) really annoy me. The ad for Madam Blanc Mysteries is another example

My preferred voiceover is Alan Watts who does the Cunard cruise adverts. " forget you were dreaming".

I detect a slight Welsh lilt in his voice and for a year I could of sworn it was Anthony Hopkins.

I agree Margo,

I especially hate the build up to Christmas with all the Parfum adverts wiith eggagerated French accents.
