got an answer from volvo :-
"The All-New Volvo C70 television advert was shot on the island of Maui.
The vast majority of the shoot took place inside the Haleakala National
Reserve. Haleakala, meaning the 'House of Sun' in local dialect is a
dormant volcano (with a crater at the summit so large that the entire
island of Manhattan can fit inside) and stretches up 10,000 feet
above-sea-level, thereby allowing us to shoot above the clouds."
Hope that clears it all up for everyone.... funnily enough I have booked a trip out to the states including Hawaii for summer 2007 - so I will be going there!!
cheers

I have watched the ad a few times and instantly recognised it as Haleakala. Did a google search and found this site.
Visited Maui three times so far - going back to Oahu and Big Island this summer. If you get a chance GO! The views from the top are amazing, you can see the neighbouring island of Hawaii (aka Big Island) and the summits of it's two volcanos which are above cloud. If you are an adventurer, you can go up on a minibus to the summit at sunrise and freewheel down by bicycle. You also get a good view of the Molokini crater (also a great snorkle trip).
The State park is open every day including holidays and is home to a very rare plant called the Silversword.
With the altitude, don't try running - you'll get out of breath really quickly.
Enough of my waffle, we just love the Hawaiian Islands :o)
