Cheers ears!
I don't think it is. (1) I've been watching a lot of Lovejoy lately, and tho the voice has that same quality of tone, etc, something - for me anyway - is missing. And (2) why would they do it? - if you are going to pay a well known name for a voiceover, chances are you want the voice they are known for, and if they wanted someone Irish, surely they would get someone Irish.

I am sure I have heard that voice elsewhere too - maybe Craig Doyle from Holiday - but I tried to find out for sure and got nowhere. I couldn't get any info on the Magners site either.

Postdog - your argument contradicts itself, if HBO really wanted an American accent for the part of Al Swearengen in Deadwood, they would have cast an American, but they didn't they cast Ian McShane who is British.

If the producers of Dr. Who wanted an English accent they wouldn't have cast David Tennant who is Scottish.

It doesn't matter where you are from in the entertainment industry, if you can do the job you're hired!
Doesn't Ian McShane actually APPEAR in Deadwood? and who said Doctor Who was English or anything else - I recall Jon Pertwee as being a bit upper crust but Sly McCoy as obviously Scottish. Anyway, the point is, you actually see them, and with voices there are loads of people who do just voices rather than act because that's their selling point. Remember that bloke who used to do all the film trailers - he never acted but made a fortune from his voice.
OK, I still think I have valid arguments concerning voiceovers BUT - after a lot of checking (because it was bugging me and I wanted to know for sure) - I have found one source that confirms it as Ian Mcshane. I don't watch Deadwood, and I guess his voice has changed a tad since he did Lovejoy, which is why I had doubts.

Apparently he did the ad for the American markets principally, and they used them as was in the UK.
