Irish Music -what is the best
8 Answers
As a local DJ, we carry plenty of music but quite often we get asked for Irish Music. As I am of Irish decent, I feel I should know this but I dont. What do they mean when they ask for ' Set' and what artists do this music.

When I was younger it was often the Pogues or The Dubliners which were played for a bit of fun. I like The Chieftans - they are really traditional, with the pipes and drums . I have a feeling they call their songs either 'sets' or 'reels' but am not sure what it means. It could be instrumental? I hope someone out there knows better than me
Depending on the type of events you do, perhaps they mean 'set dancing'?? http://www.setdancingnews.net/
It does, however seem a little formal.
Try the SawDoctors for a modern(ish) take on Irish Music.

You need to get anything by Celigh bands (probably not spelt like that!) I too am Irish descent and if you are from the South like my family they do tend to enjoy abit of a protest song in there also to name a few
Foggy Dew
The Blacksmith (when the hammer strikes the anvil)
Off to Dublin in the Green
Come out you black and tans (be careful before you play that one!)
Black Velvet Band
Dirty Old Town
Pogues would be a bit modern for my dad but some of it that they can sing to if they are a certain age!
You cant go far wrong with the Dubliners and any traditional fleadh CD's
