Why trim a dogs whiskers?

Just been watching crufts and saw this happen. Having never shown a dog can someone explain why a dogs whiskers are cut off?

breeders cut whiskers to make the cut look better overall for competitions and photoshoots etc.
Its usually done on smooth coated breeds to give a smoother cleaner line. Some breeds are not (or should not) be trimmed at all.

as the others have said, it is for cosmetic reasons for showing. Seems to be very popular in America for some breeds that we dont do it for over here.
