Smoke from a suzuki swift
Suzuki Expert Required. I have a strange one here. I have a Suzuki Swift X reg, 2001 40,000 miles only. For the most part it drives and sounds great but every so often especially as Im standing at lights or ideling for a while, as I pull away there is a great plume of smoke and it suddenly sounds like its running with a valve out or you could say it sounds like a pinking noise, within seconds its fine again. The temp gauge is fine and it does Not lose water or oil. The little mechanics light on the dashboard is illuminated but not sure what that means. Its strange because for 90 % of the time its fine and it certainly runs and drives very well but just now and again it gives a great plume of smoke. Could a valve get stuck occasionally ? Could it be a timing Thing ? Could it be because the little mechanics light is on its on board computer is causing it to do this.(if it has one?) ANYONE ANY IDEAS PLEASE I changed the plugs last week no different.

I assume this is blue oil smoke not black fuel smoke. The rattling noise could be piston slap pointing to piston damage, this would cause it to smoke after prolonged idling, has it been overheated, a compression test might give an answer. Is the mileage genuine, these problems are more usually associated with high mileages
Valve guides may be worn allowing oil to enter the cylinders. Sounds like oil smoke to me. Try this to confirm the diagnosis: go down a steep hill in third gear with your foot off the accelerator pedal. After a few hundred yards press the pedal to the floor. If there's a knocking noise from the engine and a cloud of blue smoke it's almost certainly worn valve guides.
