Mobile phones, per se can't be configured to make a call without forwarding the number. (Otherwise, your service provider wouldn't know which account to debit).

What might be possible is for your service provider not to forward the number to the recipient of the call. To activate such a service (if it exists) you'd need to dial a specific phone number (rather than altering any settings on your phone), in the same way that you have to dial a number to activate or de-activate your messaging service.

Therefore, you should look in the literature provided by the service provider (e.g. Orange or Vodafone), or on their website, to see if such a service exists.

Alternatively, tell us which network you're signed up to and we might be able to find out whether such a service is available to you.

On my Sony Ericsson k750i I just go to SETTINGS then SHOW OR HIDE NUMBER and then my number is with held from the person who I phone
On all Nokia phones there is a facility to withold your number from the caller. it can be found under the SETTINGS menu. It doesn't work with text messages, just calls.
