Hair dye

Morning everyone!
I dye my hair with Clairol Nice and Easy permanent dye every 3-4 months.
Would using a semi-permanent dye, same brand and colour look the same on my hair?
Do you have to do a strand test with semi-permanent dyes?
Are they more gentle to your hair as my hair is getting very dry and brittle.
I use intense conditioners once a week but was wondering if changing to a semi-permanent dye would help.

I would advise a strand test as the more permanent colours contain slightly different ingredients, and from experience, can look slightly different colours!

I used to use a brown and when i switched to the next "level" it was more reddy than the one I'd been using
