It depends on what the label is on. I typically use white vinegar or isopropyl alcohol. That quickly dissolves the glue as well as the paper. However, if your label is on a non-fast surface such as porcelain, or particularly on a porous surface, such as fine woods, etc. then I use a small dab of camphor oil first testing the area. The smallest residues can be initially loosened by using a rubber. However, you must be careful not to rub too deep into the finish.

I wish you the best of luck

All depending on the surfaces involved. You can buy Sticky Stuff remover - it's essentially orange oil.If you cant get any - you could try soaking it in warm water, peeling as much off as you can and then score lightly the surface of an orange and rub all over the sticky residue. If you have a hairdryer - sometimes it will come off easily with gentle heat.
wd40
if it's just the sticky stuff left, try spraying with furniture polish and rubbing off with a duster.
baby oil
A bit of WD40 always does the trick for me. I have been known to use nail varnish remover too. WD40 safer though - also comes in a handy type pen too so doesn't go everywhere.
p.s. test an inconspicuous area first if you're not sure!!
As the others have mentioned, it depends on the surface underneath. I always use lighter-fuel. Soak the sticker in lighter-fuel and give it a little time to soften the glue, then peal of scrape off.
