Cheap brands.

There are some things I simply refuse to buy on the cheap. However a recent purchase may have changed my opinion.

I needed some washing powder for a quik wash and the nearby Sainsbury's petrol station only liquid pills and it's "Basic" own brand. This was an amazing 50 pence (yes, 50 pence for a small box. I chanced my arm and bought it.

I can safely say without pride or prejudice that there was nothing wrong with it. It washed my smalls and fragenced them with no recognisable differences to brands which may cost up to �5 per box.

Why have I been wasting my hard earned cash on Persil, Daz and Aerial for years?

However, I refuse to buy cheap bread, cheap baked beans, cheap deodorant and cheap loo roll.

What items of both domesticity and foodstuffs have you been surprised at re quality.

I say again 50 PENCE a box!!!!!

bless u bewlay!! i will try everything once and then if i like it, i`ll stick to it!!!

will not buy value foods as some of it is rank! and i like bread with lots of nuts, seeds etc

I buy cheap beans and cheap washing powder but I buy expensive bread, organic milk (very expensive) and try to go for organic on most things if there's an option. I have bought lidl's when I'm on a budget though and there's notthign wrong with their cheap crap if you need to survive on it. Something I've been impressed with are Lidl's own pot noodles, much better than golden wonder but I'm guessing you don't like them anyway wardy?

One I have never been inside a Lidls and two, I had so much rehydrated crap in the Army that I doubt I will never eat a Pot Noodle in my life.

Is it true poor people make shepherds pie with Pot Noodles and Smash??

Got no idea but it sounds like something I might have concocted at some point! When it comes to survival eating, hunger is the best cook in the world! It's amazing how much joy you can get from nothing but lentils, stock and cheap bread when you're on cannery row!

I watched a prog on tele last week about buying food or household stuff one step down from your usual brands. I gave it a go with one or two items and I shall try a few more this week when I do my 'big shop'. Results so far....

1. Tinned plum toms.....Tesco Value......very good.
2. Red Kidney Beans....Tesco Value......very good
3. Tea Bags....................Tesco Value......rubbish
4. Kitchen Roll................Tesco Value......good
5. Cheddar cheese.......Tesco Value......awful

Oi once bought my niece a cheap $1 lipstick at a dollar store. I needed a lipstick and it was in my purse. It worked well and lasted a long time. Who knew? I usually won't buy really cheap make up.

I must say I am a bit of a snob when it comes to some brands especially washing powder, fab conditioner, loo roll, washing up liquid, bleach(only domestos will do), ketchup, bread, butter,medicated shampoo, ...aww let's face it i'm a brand snob, though I do buy some own brand lable stuff

Asda sensative toothpaste is �2 cheaper than sensodyne
Asda belgian choc, divine for baking
Asda pure orange juice (chilled not carton) nicer than delmonte
Asda bubble bath....loads of bubbles!
